چکیده

Theoretical light curves of four recurrent novae in outburst are modeled to obtain various physical parameters. The four objects studied here are those with a red giant companion, i.e., T Coronae Borealis, RS Ophiuchi, V745 Scorpii, and V3890 Sagittarii. Our model consists of a very massive white dwarf (WD) with an accretion disk and a red giant companion. Light curve calculation includes reflection effects of the companion star and the accretion disk together with a shadowing effect on the companion by the accretion disk. We also include a radiation-induced warping instability of the accretion disk to reproduce the second peak of T CrB outbursts. The early visual light curves are well reproduced with a thermonuclear runaway model on a very massive white dwarf close to the Chandrasekhar mass limit, i.e., MWD = 1.37± 0.01 M⊙ for T CrB, 1.35± 0.01 M⊙ for RS Oph with solar metallicity (Z = 0.02) but 1.377 ± 0.01 M⊙ for RS Oph with low metallicity (Z = 0.004), 1.35± 0.01 M⊙ for V745 Sco, and 1.35± 0.01 M⊙ for V3890 Sgr. Optically thick winds, which blow from the WDs during the outbursts, play a key role in determining the nova duration and the speed of decline because the wind quickly reduces the envelope mass on the WD. Each envelope mass at the optical maximum is also estimated to be ∆M ∼ 3 × 10M⊙ (T CrB), 2 × 10M⊙ (RS Oph), 5 × 10M⊙ (V745 Sco), 3 × 10M⊙ (V3890 Sgr), indicating an average mass accretion rate Ṁacc ∼ 0.4 × 10M⊙ yr (80 yrs, T CrB), 1.2×10M⊙ yr (18 yrs, RS Oph), 0.9×10M⊙ yr (52 yrs, V745 Sco), 1.1×10M⊙ yr (28 yrs, V3890 Sgr) during the quiescent phase before the last outburst. Although a large part of the envelope mass is blown in the wind, each WD can retain a substantial part of the envelope mass after hydrogen burning ends. Thus, we have obtained net mass-increasing rates of the WDs as ṀHe ∼ 0.1 × 10M⊙ yr (T CrB), 0.12× 10M⊙ yr (RS Oph), 0.05× 10M⊙ yr (V745 Sco), 0.11× 10M⊙ yr (V3890 Sgr). These results strongly indicate that the WDs in the recurrent novae have now grown up to near the Chandrasekhar mass limit and will soon explode as a Type Ia supernova if the WDs consist of carbon and oxygen. We have also clarified the reason why only T CrB shows a secondary maximum but the other three systems do not. Subject headings: binaries: close — novae, cataclysmic variables — stars: supernovae — stars: symbiotic — stars: individual (RS Oph, T CrB, V3890 Sgr, V745 Sco)

Recurrent Novae: What Do We Know about Them?

Recurrent novae (RNe) belong to the group of cataclysmic variables that exhibit nova outbursts at intervals on the order of decades. They are rare, with 10 Galactic RNe known to date. Two are known in the LMC, while there are a few suspected RNe in M31. Nova outburst models require a high accretion rate on a massive white dwarf to explain the recurring nova outbursts, making this class of objec...

Prediction of Supersoft X-ray Phase during the 2006 Outburst of Rs Ophiuchi

RS Ophiuchi is one of the well-observed recurrent novae and also a candidate progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. Its sixth recorded outburst was discovered on 12 February 2006. Detection of a supersoft X-ray phase will provide a firm confirmation of hydrogen shell-burning on the white dwarf and its turn-on/turn-off dates strongly constrain a mass range of the white dwarf, which clarify whether or...

CONSTRAINTS ON THE PROGENITOR SYSTEM OF THE TYPE Ia SUPERNOVA 2014J FROM PRE-EXPLOSION HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE IMAGING

We constrain the properties of the progenitor system of the highly reddened Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2014J in Messier 82 (M82; d ≈ 3.5 Mpc). We determine the supernova (SN) location using Keck-II K-band adaptive optics images, and we find no evidence for flux from a progenitor system in pre-explosion near-ultraviolet through near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Our upper limits e...

OPTICAL AND X-RAY OBSERVATIONS OF M31N 2007-12b: AN EXTRAGALACTIC RECURRENT NOVA WITH A DETECTED PROGENITOR?

We report combined optical and X-ray observations of nova M31N 2007-12b. Optical spectroscopy obtained 5 days after the 2007 December outburst shows evidence of very high ejection velocities (FWHM Hα ≃ 4500 km s). In addition, Swift X-ray data show that M31N 2007-12b is associated with a Super-Soft Source (SSS) which appeared between 21 and 35 days post-outburst and turned off between then and ...

The Hydrogen Burning Turn-off of Rs Ophiuchi 2006

We report a coordinated multi-band photometry of the RS Oph 2006 outburst and highlight the emission line free y-band photometry that shows a mid-plateau phase at y ∼ 10.2 mag from day 40 to day 75 after the discovery followed by a sharp drop of the final decline. Such mid-plateau phases are observed in other two recurrent novae, U Sco and CI Aql, and are interpreted as a bright disk irradiated...
